About

LETHBRIDGE CHINOOK REGIONAL HOSPITAL

The New Lethbridge Chinook Regional Hospital (LCRH) was designed with a focus on patient comfort, leading to faster recovery times and improved staff retention.

The integration of LITEFLAM XT90 fire-rated glass floor assemblies allows natural light to penetrate deep within the hospital, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and promoting a healing environment. Greenlite Glass Systems collaborated with Perkins + Will to design and manufacture a glass floor assembly that complies with ASTM E119 and CAN/ULC S101 standards for resistive glass.

This approach not only provides health benefits but also results in cost savings over the hospital's lifecycle by maximizing the use of natural light.

PROJECT CHALLENGES

Integrating Fire-Rated Glass Flooring in Healthcare Design

  • Integrating modern fire-rated glass flooring into a healthcare setting while meeting strict ASTM E119 and CAN/ULC S101 fire-resistive standards.
  • Ensuring the structural integrity and slip resistance of glass floors to withstand high foot traffic in a hospital environment.
  • Balancing the infusion of natural light with patient privacy and comfort considerations.
  • Coordinating construction phases to minimize disruption to ongoing hospital operations.
Project SOLUTION

LITEFLAM XT90: Enhancing Safety and Light in Hospitals

  • Employed the LITEFLAM XT120 system, a patented insulated glass floor assembly designed for interior applications, providing a 2-hour fire rating and impact resistance.
  • Incorporated durable, non-slip surfaces on the glass flooring to ensure safety and compliance with healthcare facility standards.
  • Designed the layout to maximize natural light penetration while maintaining areas of privacy for patients.
  • Implemented a multi-phased construction plan in collaboration with Halse Martin Construction to ensure continuous hospital functionality during renovations.
PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS

Pioneering Sustainable Healthcare Design in Lethbridge

  • Successfully integrated advanced fire-rated glass flooring technology into a healthcare environment, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality.
  • Achieved a balance between modern design elements and the stringent safety requirements of a hospital setting.
  • Enhanced patient and staff well-being through increased natural light, contributing to faster recovery times and improved staff retention.
  • Set a precedent as the first healthcare project in Canada to utilize the USGBC-LEED for Healthcare rating system, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable and patient-centered design.
